As the art coordinator at our school, I'm always on the lookout for creative gift ideas for leaving teachers—something truly special, memorable, and meaningful. So when we learned that one of our much-loved teachers was moving on, I knew we had to go beyond the usual signed card or gift voucher.
This teacher is known throughout the school for their passion for trainers (or sneakers)—bright, bold, stylish ones! So, inspired by this and wanting every child to be part of something personal, we came up with a leaving teacher gift idea that turned out to be both unique and deeply touching.
👟 The Concept: 140 Tiny Trainer Designs, One Big Goodbye
Every single child in the school—from our youngest Nursery pupils to our confident Year 6s—designed a brand-new trainer for this teacher. Using a limited palette of just five colours (a great creative challenge!), they let their imaginations run wild.
From rainbow soles to zigzag laces, from flame details to glittery high-tops, each design told a little story. Every shoe was unique—just like each child—and together, they formed a beautiful visual timeline of growth and creativity.
Once completed, I arranged them in a large frame in age order—from youngest to oldest. The finished piece was a stunning mosaic of colour, love, and imagination—a visual thank you that brought a tear to the teacher’s eye.
🖼️ Why It Worked
It involved everyone: From Nursery to Year 6, every child had a voice.
It was highly personal: The theme reflected something the teacher loves.
It told a story: You could see the progression of age and artistic development.
It will last forever: A framed artwork is something you can hang at home or in your next classroom.
💡 Tips for Creating a Memorable Teacher Leaving Gift
If you're looking for a teacher appreciation gift idea or trying to come up with the best farewell gift for a teacher, here are some things I learned from this project:
Pick a personal theme that means something to the teacher—whether it's books, coffee, music, gardening, or shoes!
Give children creative freedom within a simple structure (we used a colour palette of just five shades).
Turn it into a collaborative art piece—something that represents the whole school.
Frame it beautifully so it feels polished and permanent.
This project wasn’t just a present—it was a celebration of the relationship between a teacher and their pupils, a keepsake full of personality, and a personalised leaving teacher gift that won't be forgotten.
If you’re a fellow teacher, art lead, or simply someone looking to create a heartfelt farewell for a colleague, I can’t recommend this idea enough. It’s creative, inclusive, and meaningful—and it reminds us that the best gifts don’t come from shops, but from the heart.

I'd love to see your own teacher leaving gift frames (and any other school-wide leaving teacher project ideas)
Let's inspire children and teachers who want to say thank you to a special teacher who is moving on to pastures new..
