Time is an incredible force—constant, patient, and forgiving. In my poem Days, I wanted to bring time to life by giving it human qualities, a literary device called personification. This makes abstract concepts like time easier for children to understand. This personification poem for kids portrays the cycle of day and night as kind-hearted beings, always offering us another chance to improve, learn, and grow.
Through Days, I express my gratitude to time itself. Despite humanity’s many mistakes, the sun continues to rise, giving us "one more chance, one more try." This gentle repetition helps young readers grasp the poem’s hopeful message—every new day is an opportunity to do better. Using personification for kids in poetry helps them see the world differently, transforming everyday occurrences into meaningful lessons.
By the end of the poem, I reflect on how undeserving we sometimes feel of this endless kindness. Yet, time never stops. This is a powerful way to teach children about second chances and responsibility. I hope Days inspires young readers to appreciate time, embrace growth, and strive to "get it right" with each new dawn.
Days
After 1.658
trillion visits
you still forgive
the mistakes we make
on Earth
You and Night
working in exquisite harmony
to always give us
one more chance
one more try
one more day
one more night
one more revolution
to get it right
Thank you
for being
so kind
Yours,
Mark Bird

We don’t deserve you
